    Lyrics

    Unicornio

This song has also been sung by Mercedes Sosa and many others

My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday.
I left it grazing and it disappeared.
Any information, I will pay for it well.
The flowers that it left behind
don't want to talk to me.

My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
I don't know if it left me, or if it got lost,
and I don't have but one blue unicorn.
If anyone's got any news, I beg to hear them.
A hundred thousand or a million, I will pay.
My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
    it went away.

My unicorn and I became friends,
a little bit with love, a little bit with truth.
With its indigo horn it was fishing for a song
knowing how to share it was its calling.

My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
and it may seem perhaps like an obsession
but I don't have but one blue unicorn
and even if I had two I only wanted that one.
Any information, I will pay for it,
My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
    it went away.

    La Desilusión
Silvio Rodriguez (from the CD called Silvio, 1992)

This song was translated by Avi Chomsky (SSC, History), who wrote:

"This song is clearly critical of the social and moral implications of the Special Period. It speaks of loss of certainty about the inevitability and strength of the revolution, the material consequences of both the economic crisis and of the measures taken in its wake--like dollarization, foreign investment, and self-employment, that have re-introduced inequalities, but even worse, greed. The lyrics evoke pre-revolutionary decadence. The temptation to put oneself first and revive capitalist values goes hand in hand with market openings, and with loss of faith in the viability of the revolutionary project.

Yet the song is also critical of the disillusionment. It is the disillusionment itself that turns the diamond into coal, that causes people to interpret the current measures as giving up rather than seeking new ways to accomplish revolutionary goals. "It's fashionable to be disillusioned. About everthing: from history to tourism," he commented on the song. "But I believe that there are stories and history. And as for tourism, I think that, like the truth, there is no alternative.""

    Como monedas
    Tintineó su tema
    La desilusión
    Con boca roja
    Y grandes mamas flojas
    La desilusión
    Fumando rubios
    Y exhalando alcohol
Bordado el dueño de la cama
    En la ropa interior.

    Qué delirio en interrogación
    Qué suicidio en investigación
    Brillante exposición de modas
    La desilusión.

    Abrió un negocio
    Reanimando el ocio
    La desilusión
    Como turismo
    Inventó el abismo
    La desilusión
    Tocó el diamante
    Y lo volvió carbón
    Y al atorrante
    Lo sembró en la administración

    Qué delirio en interrogación
    Qué suicidio en investigación
    Brillante exposición de modas
    La desilusión.

    Like coins
    Disillusionment jingles its theme
    Disillusionment.
    With a red mouth
    And big droopy breasts
    Disillusionment
    Smoking light tobacco
    And exhaling alcohol
The owner of the bed embroidered
    In its underwear.

    What frenzy in interrogating
    What suicide in investigating
    A brilliant fashion show
    Disillusionment.

    It opened a business
    Reviving leisure
    Disillusionment.
    Like tourism
    It invented the abyss
    Disillusionment
    It touched the diamond
    And turned it to coal
    And it planted a good-for-nothing
    In the administration.
