Language MOO

Introduction

A MOO is an object oriented MUD. And a MUD is a Multi-user Domain, of course. Or a MUVE, a Multi-user Virtual Environment. More specifically, "MOOs are internet accessible, text mediated virtual environments well suited for distance learning" (source).

Somewhat similar to a chat room, a MOO is a virtual place where a group of people can communicate. MOO's are often used for academic purposes (among other things).

You can access a MOO through telnet protocols (your Web browser) or with a special client program, such as Pueblo, Chaco's popular MUD client. The latest version of Pueblo is 2.01. Chaco was acquired by Andromedia, which seems to have been acquired by Macromedia. Pueblo 2.01 is installed on all the computers at the LRC.

MundoHispano: The Spanish Language Learning MOO

(Information obtained from the MundoHispano website at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.)

"MundoHispano is a MOO that was developed by Lonnie Turbee (aka "Colega") and Mike Mudge. Most importantly, however, MundoHispano is a community of native speakers of Spanish from around the world, teachers and learners of Spanish, and computer programmers, all of whom volunteer their time and talent to make this a dynamic virtual world."

In the MundoHispano MOO you can:

  • "enter at the Puerta del Sol in the heart of Madrid
  • join friends on the terraza at the Retiro
  • have drinks and tapas in the Bar de Mejillones
  • go skiing with Lince on the slopes of Navacerrada
  • listen to the serenades of a "tuna" and a "mariachi"
  • attend a tertulia in the Café Gijón
  • teach and learn in a multi-lingual environment at the Café Tándem
  • ask Fomal to publish your book or poetry at Ediciones Addisley-Wesson
  • go to the library to read books in the public domain
  • play with MariLuz's dog Angelito
  • create your own room and the objects in it

When you tire of Madrid, take a flight from Barajas airport to other cities in MundoHispano. Type in the number of the flight you want to take, and you're off to one of dozens of cities that have been built by native speakers of Spanish who connect from the cities they have built."
