Media Tools used at the LRC

Media players (software)

Ideally the LRC would use a single media player for playing sound and video files. Instead, the LRC supports three different media players:

  • Winamp v. 2.64
  • RealAudio Player v. 8 (beta)
  • Windows Media Player v. 7

In addition there is a fourth media player which is not used in the computer stations, but which is used for other purposes:

  • MusicMatch Jukebox v. 5
and another one that has something to be said for, but which his not used here:
  • RealJukebox (not in v. 2 beta)

Each one of these tools has advantages and disadvantages. They are all free for the download, however.

Winamp Sleek, small size audio player. Great for playing MP3 files. Uses few computer resources. Allows you to view text (such as lyrics) kept inside the MP3 files. Can't do anything else, though.
RealAudio Player Streaming audio and video on the Web, such as that from Web radio stations, is typically in this format. RealAudio can also play other formats, such as MP3, but it doesn't have the playlist and text capabilities of Winamp.
Windows Media Player v. 7 This is the media player which comes with Windows. Originally a very simple and unambitious piece of software, version 7 which came out in July 2000, is designed to compete with RealPlayer and RealJukebox. WinMP can play the Windows media formats and MP3 format, but not RealAudio. Some radio stations use this format in addition to the RealAudio format, and some instead of it. WinMP can extract sound tracks from CD's into its own compressed standard format, .asf, .wma, and .wmv (not into MP3). Excellent Media Guide, Radio Tuner, and Media Library.
MusicMatch Jukebox v. 5 The greatest thing about this player is its ability to copy tracks from a CD nto MP3 format, the standard for high-quality compression which is not encumbered by copyright protections.
RealJukebox RealJukebox can play any digital sound files. It can also record into MP3 and RealAudio format. This player is not used here because of incompatibilities encountered with version 1. Version 2 is in the works and may function better.

Crucial audio programs

Cool Edit 2000 by Syntrillium
This program will allow you to record and edit sound files or change files from one format to another. Absolutely terrific.

MP3 Manager 32
"MP3 Manager is a wide use, features rich playlist application for managing MP3 sound files and frontend for MP3 players. It is based on adding ID3 Tags and Lyrics3 Tags from MP3 files into powerful database system. MP3 Manager is free."

Lyrics plugin for Winamp + Lyrics Editor
"Plugin to show lyrics and ID tags inside mp3 files from winamp. The lyrics tag is kept INSIDE the mp3 file."

Dirhtml
"Dirhtml creates index.html files from a directory list using the GUI or command line, optionally including HTML code of your own design at any point in the generated file. With dirhtml, your index.html files can be unique and arbitrarily complex. Dirhtml works under Windows 95/98/NT/2000."

MPEG Audio Collection
"A program that is designed to organize your MPEG audio file collection. It is fast and easy to use, scans selected drives for *.mpa, *.mp2 and *.mp3 files, and lists them in an Explorer-style tree-view interface. Just select a file to retrieve the size, bit rate, length, sample rate, and channel mode. Double-click the file to play it with its associated application (most likely Windows Media Player or Winamp). Other features include search support, playlists creating and a convenient MP3 tag editor."

TagMaster
"TagM lets you edit the ID3 tag in MP3 files, which contains information like the name of the artist, song, album, etc - but it doesn't just stop there. TagM also can rename files using any of the information inside the files (including bps and sample rate) making it much easier to find the song you're after. Best of all, it can perform any of these operations on single files, or every file in your MP3 directory..."

Crucial picture and video programs

IrfanView
IrfanView 32 is a small, versatile and excellent image file viewer for Windows. Free too. You can also use the program for image conversion and resizing, among other things. By Irfan Skiljan from the Technical University of Viena (Technischen Universität Wien).

Exercise authoring tools

Hot Potatoes
The most complete and user-friendly program -- a suite of programs, actually -- that I have found for making language study, interactive web pages. Half-Baked Software is a pseudonym of three members of the University of Victoria CALL Lab Research and Development team. They provide this suite free of charge.
