Hispanics are all around us. They are a rapidly growing segment of the US population. Wouldn't you like to get to know them?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than one in eight people in the United States (13.3% or 37.4 million) were of Hispanic/Latino origin in March 2002 (not counting Puerto Ricans living in Puerto Rico ).

Although people of Hispanic descent have been part of this land before our country was even born, their presence is becoming more noticeable all over the US and they have recently become the largest minority group in the country.

This site was created to help you get to know about these Hispanics. It has been divided into the following sections, which can be accessed from the menu bar under the header. (Put the mouse pointer over words with any yellow background to view more information. Click on a link to go to the page.)

  1. Definitions
  2. Detailed information about Hispanics in the US
  3. Hispanics in the North Shore region and in Massachusetts
  4. Hispanics and race
  5. History of Hispanics
  6. Hispanic identity in the US
  7. Myths about Hispanics

We would like this site to grow and improve and welcome your feedback. Please let us know what you think about it.

This site will eventually be supplemented with learning activities, such as PBU's (project-based units), which will help Spanish language students at Salem State get to have a more first hand experience with Hispanics, their language and their culture.

This subsite was created and is updated by Dr. Jon Aske, who is solely responsible for its content. We hope you will enjoy our site. Please send us your feedback.
