Cuba Trip 2000 Day 1

Site Map

In March a group of twenty Salem State College students and professors travelled to Cuba for eight days. During the trip, we visited Havana, Trinidad, and Santa Clara. The trip was organized and led by Dr. Avi Chomsky and Dr. Jon Aske, professors of History and Spanish, respectively. During the trip, we attended several meetings set up by our professors, as well as some meetings set up by representatives of the Cuban government. From photographs taken by various people who went on the trip, we have chosen some that illustrate a little of what we saw while we were there. Enjoy...

Our trip from Boston to Cuba took over ten hours, and required connections in both Fort Lauderdale and the island of Nassau. The Cuban plane that took us from Nassau to Cuba was a small Russian manufactured plane.
This is the José Martí Airport in Havana. We arrived in late afternoon, but found the airport to be surprisingly quiet.
Our guide for the trip, Ernesto Arrastía, met us at the airport, and brought us to La Casona, a guest house in Havana. La Casona is in the neighborhood of Vedado, which, before the Revolution, was a rich neighborhood. Now many of its mansions serve as either guest houses or homes to diplomats.
