Spanish dictionaries

This is a copy of the dictionary question in the Student FAQ

Question: Should I buy a dictionary for my language class and which one should I buy?

A good dictionary is a crucial possession when you are learning a language, especially after the beginning level.

Good, full-size dictionaries are relatively inexpensive. One of the best full-size Spanish-English dictionaries, for instance, the The Oxford Spanish Dictionary, which is very reasonably priced. That is my favorite. (See the book's web page at Oxford University Press.)

The Oxford Spanish Dictionary: Spanish-English/english-Spanish. Beatriz Galimberti Jarman (Editor) Roy Russell (Editor). Format: Hardcover, 1st ed., 1829pp. ISBN: 0198645104. Publisher: Oxford University Press, Incorporated. (At Barnes&Noble: $31.50; At amazon.com: $31.50.)

The full-size Larousse is another excellent dictionary:

Larousse Diccionario Standard: Espanol-Ingles-English-Spanish Larousse Publications Retail Price: $29.95 Our Price: $20.96 You Save: $8.99 (30%) In-Stock: Ships within 24 hours Format: Hardcover, 1378pp. ISBN: 2034202805 Publisher: Larousse Kingfisher Chambers, Incorporated Pub. Date: August 1995. (At Barnes&Noble: $20.96; At amazon.com: $20.97.)

The same thing is true for French and other languages. The full-size Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary is also $31.50 at Amazon.com (30% discount).

Smaller dictionaries are good because you're more likely to carry them with you and because they don't confuse you with the less commonly used senses of words. But be careful. Not all small dictionaries are comparable. Check with your professor before you buy. These dictionaries are very inexpensive and you should probably get one, even if you also have a full-size dictionary. For Spanish, for instance, a good small-sized, such as the American Heritage Larousse Spanish Dictionary is only $4.79 at Amazon.com. I do NOT recommend the University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary/Spanish-English English-Spanish, which I don't think is as good, though you can buy it for $3.99.
